Projects
The book “Global Energy Transformation” is based on a number of small projects, analyzing the business consequences of a reduction in the oil and energy supply. Based on this the author developed a framework for large scale transformation. It will not be possible to transform large energy systems based on the tiny resources that are at present available for the analysis of business and management issues, and technology development and market based growth alone will not solve the transformation problem. At some point in this development, governments, industries and large companies will realize that the impact on business and economic growth from changing circumstances in energy sectors will be severe. At some point, the cost of doing nothing will be higher than the cost of analyzing these issues. At a yet further point, it will become obvious that the cost of avoiding large scale transformation will exceed the high cost of systematic transformation. As of May 2009, many players seem to wait and see who will take the first step outside of market driven change that will signal the need for large scale managed change. Once this necessary step has been taken, there will be a rapid growth in the volume of planned and managed change projects. These will consist of different types of projects, ranging from analyses of opportunities, strategy development on a number of levels, planning and the forming of coalitions of companies and program teams in anticipation of future business opportunities and transformation challenges.
Most prominently, however, governments need to step in and provide strategic directions for companies, sectors and industries. We need to make preparations for the equivalent of an “Apollo Program”. The investment needs will be large and investments made by companies will need to be made in an environment of relative financial security. Governments will need to provide this security. This calls for large scale programs that will lay down the framework for investments made by the financial market, but most probably investments in development and expansion of new technology platforms will need to be borne by governments and companies together.
Global Energy Transformation Institute will work with critical projects at the front of this development, making management resources available for high level consultancy and research.
