Transportation Electrification - Video Transcript
This video will be about transportation electrification.
Many are curious about the electrification of transportation and in this video, I will present many facts and conclusions that are likely to startle viewers.
Many seem to think that the change will be straightforward and that it can be achieved in only 10 or 20 years.
All auto companies are developing electric cars lorries and busses to satisfy rapidly growing demand, and both public and private transportation will need to be electrified.
But there are worrying signs on the horizon.
Elon Musk has said that for the US to change all vehicles to electric, the country will have to double power generation from the present amount of 4000 terawatt hours per year. He also said that investments will be needed in all parts of power grids.
The CEO of Volvo trucks, Martin Lundstedt, has said that fast charging 1000 heavy trucks at the same time may require the capacity of one nuclear reactor. He also urged the Swedish government to increase the speed of investment in new power generation.
Volkswagen remarked in a press release that the sales of electric cars is growing too slowly.
Ford forecast a loss of $60,000 for every electric vehicle sold in 2023.
Stellantis, the owner of Opel, Peugeot, Fiat, Chrysler and Citroën, warned that the car market may collapse in 2035 as many car buyers may not be able to afford electric cars.
Åsa Pettersson, CEO of the Swedish Industry Organization of Utilities, Energiföretagen, warned that there is not enough competent personnel available for the green transition.
And in the project I led called “Electromobility training for administrators and decision makers”, we have found that many leaders and administrators in public organizations and private companies will need training to participate in transformation projects.
For the moment, less than 3% of all cars and much fewer trucks are electric and a large share of those are hybrids with small batteries.
There will be a big need for electromobility strategists and architects to design cost effective and user friendly systems.
In a future with 50, 60, 70 or 80% electric vehicles, dramatic expansion of charging infrastructure, power grids and power generation will be needed, and tens of thousands, or most probably hundreds of thousands of people will need to work in projects and they will need relevant competence.
For this change to succeed, governments will need to take the lead.
I've worked with these issues almost 20 years and I make these videos to help you understand what's needed for such a large scale change to succeed.
